The Philosophy of 4,000 Weeks
If you live to be 80 years old, your life will consist of approximately 4,160 weeks. When we think of life in years, decades feel broad and inexhaustible. When you map your life as individual weekly squares, the true scarcity of human time becomes visceral.
As the Roman stoic philosopher Seneca observed over two millennia ago in On the Shortness of Life: "It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous estimate has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested."
Why visualize time in weeks?
Days pass too quickly to register meaningful progress. Years feel abstract. Weeks are the human scale of productivity and intentionality.
What is Memento Mori?
A Latin phrase meaning "Remember that you must die." Historically practiced by stoics and thinkers as a tool to vanquish trivial anxiety and focus on what matters.
